Throughout the next few days, the Sayville Fire Department will be meeting with various Emergency Services agencies to put together a plan should Hurricane Earl become a threat to our area later in the week. This is the first of several hurricane safety articles that will be posted each day until the threat of a storm passes or the storm is over and the area is considered safe.

It's several days before the storm is scheduled to be in our area. However, now is the time to begin preparations. Begin gathering the following list of supplies and documents:

Water - at least 1 gallon daily per person to last 3 to 7 days

Food – non-perishable food, manual can opener, cooking fuel, cooking tools, paper goods and plastic utensils to last for 3 to 7 days

Clothing-seasonal/rain gear/sturdy shoes for 3 to 7 days

First aid kit

Prescription and non-prescription medications

Eye glasses

Toiletries/hygiene items

Infant Needs (formula, diapers, etc .)

Full gas tanks in your vehicles

Radio - Battery operated and NOAA weather radio

Telephones - Fully charged cell phone with extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set

Cash (with some small bills) and credit cards

Keys

Toys, books and games

Important documents in a waterproof container or watertight re-sealable plastic bag (insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, identification, phone numbers etc.)

Tools - keep a set of basic tools with you during the storm

Pet care items (food and water, medical records, medications, pet carrier, muzzle, leash)
