| The Sayville Fire Department Extrication Team won 3rd Place for competing in the Fire, Rescue & EMS Mega Show Extrication Challenge at the Nassau Coliseum. Rescue Captain and team member Dan Karl said, "For the second time in four years, the Sayville Fire Department has taken home a trophy for competing in this event. This year Sayville was presented with a very difficult motor vehicle accident rescue scenario. Once again, our members demonstrated the highest level of skill in removing the trapped "victim" from the wreckage. Our continued success in these competitions clearly reflects the countless hours of training and dedication put forth by all of the members of the Sayville Fire Department". The competition is set up to simulate a real response to a serious motor vehicle accident (MVA). This competition format allows six members to quickly assess the situation, plan and implement a strategy just like they would if the rescuers rolled up to a real motor vehicle accident scene in their rescue truck. Three experienced judges accredited by the Transportation Emergency Rescue Committee of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (TERC) score and critique the teams. Teams were judged in many areas, such as extrication performance and strategy, safety, patient care, communication, coordination and control. The team competes in this challenge because it gives members extra hands-on experience with serious motor vehicle accidents. In addition, the judges share their knowledge of alternative extrication approaches and techniques.
