On Sunday January 14th at approximately 12:30pm the Sayville Fire Department was activated for a reported structure fire on Johnson Avenue. Within one minute of activation, two Sayville FD engines were responding to the alarm. During the response, the dispatcher advised units that a member of the Sayville Community Ambulance Company was in the area and reporting that it was a working fire. Engine 2 while responding via Sunrise Highway advised that there was a column of smoke visible in the distance and to have the mutual aid response plan activated.

Units soon arrived on scene to find a heavy fire and smoke condition coming from a 1 story garage which was also threatening the house. A water supply was established and two hose lines quickly stretched to attack the fire by the crews. Assistant Chiefs Quarte and Reutter along with additional Sayville Fire Department units arrived soon after the initial two engines. Chief Quarte took command with the initial crews rapidly knocking down the fire. Other arriving units checked for possible extension into the house and opened up checking for hidden pockets of fire during overhaul.

The Bohemia Fire Department responded on mutual aid to stand by at the scene as the Rapid Intervention Team should a firefighter become injured or trapped. The West Sayville and Holbrook Fire Departments provided stand by coverage of the district in the event any other alarms were received during the fire. The Sayville Community Ambulance Company was on scene standing by to provide emergency medical services should they be needed.

The Sayville Fire Department responded with 2 chiefs, 4 engines, 1 ladder, 1 rescue, 1 safety vehicle, 3 fire police units and a total of 60 volunteer firefighters. The Town of Islip Fire Marshals office responded for a routine investigation of the fire. There were no reported injuries to any residents or firefighters and all units were back in service by 2pm.
