It is with deep regret that the Chiefs Office of the Sayville Fire Department announces the passing of Resolute Hose Company #1 life member, former department secretary, and Ex-Fire Police Captain John "Jack" Edwards. Our sincere condolences to the Edwards family during this difficult time.
John “Jack” W. Edwards, 84, of Port Charlotte, FL passed away January 18, 2020. He was born January 27, 1935 in Sayville, Long Island, New York to John R. and Anna (nee Lewis) Edwards. He married Bertha Grunden on April 5, 1956. He worked from 1952 to 1967 at the A&P Tea Company and left there to open a Stationary Business which he operated till 1972. He then worked as the Chief custodial engineer for the North Babylon School District from 1972 till retiring in 1992. During all his working years he also worked part time for the Sayville United Methodist Church. He was very active in his community as a member of the Sayville United Methodist Church from 1956 until his passing. He loved his church and was active in many positions in the church including as a Lay Leader. He was a lifetime member of the Community Ambulance Company and served as Secretary for 5 years. A lifetime member of the Resolute Hose Company and the Sayville Fire Department serving as Secretary for the department for 21 years and Captain of the Fire Police for 6 years. He was a lifetime member of the Sayville Historical Society and was a past president. He was past president of the Association of Suffolk County Historical Societies and was involved with the Boy Scouts for 35 years, serving as Scoutmaster for 15 years. He and his wife moved to Florida permanently in 1994 as residents of Buttonwood Village. He enjoyed collecting post cards, reading and volunteer work. He was survived by his wife of 63 years, Bertha Edwards, children, George & Eileen Edwards of Bayport, NY and Susan (Edwards) & Anthony Carbone of Sodus, NY. He also leaves behind 4 grandchildren: Ruth Anne Carbone (Louis Dudley), Joy Love Edwards (Steven Katz), Nicholas Carbone and Jon-Anthony Carbone (Meghan Carbone), and 3 great-grandchildren.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service in Sayville, New York at a later date. |
