Water Rescue

On January 21st at 8:31 AM the Sayville Fire Department was toned out for a submerged car off of the docks behind Steins Marina. Under the command of Chief Roy Verspoor members of the Sayville FD got into their Ice Commander cold water immersion suits and entered the frigid waters to extract any victims that might be trapped in the car. Fortunately, no bodies were found inside the submerged car. The Bayport Fire Department also responded as part of a mutual aid plan. Bayport's Chief John D'Amico deployed a diver and rescue swimmer into the cold water to search the area around the vehicle for possible victims. After a 20 minute underwater search in zero visibility conditions, it was determined that there were no victims at the site of the submerged car.

The Sayville and Bayport Fire Departments are well trained and equipped to handle year-round water and ice rescues. The two departments often work together through an automatic mutual aid plan. This time the car turned out to be stolen and intentionally driven into the waters. Although there turned out to be no victims, the departments once again showed that they are able to combine their resources and work efficiently as a team to get the job done.
