There was little rest for Sayville volunteer Firefighters during March's destructive Nor'easter during the weekend of March 13th. There were over 30 calls between 11:45 AM on Saturday and 9:15PM on Sunday. Most of the alarms were weather related such as downed wires, burning transformers, electric poles on fire, fallen trees. Sayville, along with several other departments, also sent an engine and crew to Bay Shore to cover some of their alarms during the storm.
Sayville's volunteer firefighters diligently responded to this unusually high volume of calls in the heavy rain and hurricane strength winds to make sure residents were safe. These dedicated firefighters were able to get out there and do their job due to the support of their families. Many responding firefighters had damage to their property and were without electricity themselves.
This Nor'easter was not the only storm this winter requiring Sayville firefighters to gather at their respective stations for shifts of standby duty. They were also called upon during this winter's snowstorms. But, that's what volunteer firefighters do…they train, prepare for and respond to many different kinds of emergencies within their own town and lend a hand to other areas when needed.
