At approximately 6:40PM on Sunday, January 24th, the Sayville Fire Department was dispatched to their 35th alarm of the year and 4th alarm of the day for a structure fire on Newton Street. Every piece of Sayville's fire apparatus quickly filled up with volunteer firefighters and arrived on scene within minutes. Sayville's heavy manpower response was especially swift as many members were already at the firehouse for the big Jets vs. Colts playoff game. Chief Lawrence Sesso took command on the scene as equipment and dozens of firefighters rolled in.
Upon arrival, firefighters were met with extensive fire. The garage and breezeway were fully engulfed and the fire was blowing out the rear of the home. Although all occupants were believed to be out, firefighters took no chances and entered the home to do a quick search for trapped occupants. Fortunately, all occupants had safely evacuated the home. Three hand lines were quickly put into operation to knock down the fire in the main part of the house as well as the garage.
As part of Sayville's Automatic Mutual Aid Plan, Bayport and Holbrook Fire Departments each arrived on scene to lend a hand while West Sayville stood by at Sayville's Headquarters to cover any additional alarms that might come in with Sayville's manpower and equipment already committed to the house fire. Sayville Community Ambulance was also on scene and ready to tend to any medical emergencies.
Unfortunately, the house suffered extensive damage. Fortunately, there were no injuries sustained by the volunteer firefighters and the occupants of the house. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
