April 2, 2013

On Sunday, March 17, 2013, at 2216 hours, the Sayville Fire Department was activated for a structure fire, reported "fire from the roof" in the vicinity of Canterbury Drive and Marseille Path. First arriving unit 3-11-31 Chief Chris Chester confirmed a visible fire condition at the roof level of (1) story wood-frame private dwelling at the reported intersection. In addition to the arrival of the Chief, neighbors "pounding" on the front door alerted the homeowner to the situation. Making his way to the rear yard, Chief Chester "sized-up" a fire condition burning from within the wood frame chimney assembly with possible extension to the interior of the home. Chief of Department 3-11-30 Michael Butler soon arrived on scene and established Command. Orders were given to first due Engine 3-11-1 Capt. Reutlinger and crew to "start a line" to the front door and for Truck 3-11-9 Capt. Hodgkinson and his entry team to get inside and "open up" while the outside teams raised portable ladders for roof access. Crews opened up and the fire was knocked down and limited to the roof area with some extension to the interior walls. A second line was stretched by the members of Engine 3-11-4 and repositioned to the roof for overhaul with the assistance of Rescue 3-11-6's crew. After an extensive salvage and overhaul effort, the chiefs were satisfied that the fire was extinguished. The homeowner and his family were safely removed during operations. Due to the quick response of the Sayville Fire Department on a St. Patricks Day evening the fire was contained to the roof area with minor extension to the interior walls. The Town of Islip Fire Marshal and Suffolk County Arson were notified for an investigation.
